Blood Tithe eBook Glenn Soucy

Blood Tithe written by Glenn Soucy was a page-turner. The story is centered around a young boy, Jeremy, and the complex circumstances that shape his life. It begins with Jeremy falling into a hole and becomes saturated with an energy that radically changes his physical body that gives him unique powers. The path of his life is gripping. Owning these powers slowly begins to create discord in his family and with his school friends. It drives a wedge in his relationship with his mother and sister. It is sad to watch the deterioration of this family and the pain that it creates in Jeremy, a boy of five and is unable to understand what has happened to him.

The story jumps back and forth, always tossing you a tidbit of excitement that entices you to read on in order to find out what lays behind the source of his powers and how he will overcome the opposing forces attacking him.

The plot was well thought out. Strong and riveting. I would highly recommend Blood Tithe but be forewarned, you will not be able to set it down and when you finish, you will run to grab another one of Glenn's books to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

Grab a bowl of popcorn, curl up in one of your favorite reading chairs and enjoy this supurbly written story.

Blood Tithe eBook Glenn Soucy Reviews

I found Glenn on Twitter and after talking shop with him for a little bit, we decided to exchange books. Not sure if he read or is reading mine, but I had a long flight to Japan and Blood Tithe was at the front of my reading queue. With my wife sleeping away the hours next to me I devoured the whole thing, start to finish, in one setting. Not sure how that influenced my experience with the book; reading for several hours straight is not something I normally have the time or leisure to do. I was able to immerse myself fully in Blood Tithe and came away tired, but better for the experience.
I usually shy away from books that contain certain points of view. I am what I am, a guy, and I like stories that ground me in the perspective of a guy, potentially someone that is me or could be me.
When I started Blood Tithe and found that it was told in the voice of a young boy, I was ready to dump it. I figured that a book with a kid in it isn't going to contain enough conflict, violence, or mature relationships in it to be interesting to me. As things happened, though, I was already in the air, my tablet was in Airplane Mode, and I didn't have the foresight to actually download any other book than than Glenn's. Lucky for me then, that after the first few pages my misconceptions disappeared.
The story unfolds in a boy's voice, but is told from the point of view of the young man he eventually becomes. That, I found, was difference enough to keep me reading, and even though I disagreed with some of the actions, decisions, and feelings Jeremy (the main character) did, made, or felt, I still empathized with his situation, and in the context of the story, could see why he dealt with or experienced things the way he did. Also, in theory, it's kind of the reader's job to partake in literature that doesn't mirror his own universe, so if Jeremy did everything like Rob (me) would have, the book wouldn't have been as interesting. Glenn did a great job of pulling me into the moment, getting me to experience the same things Jeremy experienced.
I plan on reading more of Glenn's books. I want to see if this book is a fluke or if he has a consistent and reliable ability to pull the reader in like I was during Blood Tithe.
So...the short version of my review is this Great story, easy to read, and it kept me thinking about it after I was finished with it. Good books have these ingredients, which makes Blood Tithe a good book. Buy it - you won't be disappointed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the protagonist, Jeremy, engaging and was more than happy to spend the weekend caught up in his life. I found Jeremy's resilience and relationships with his parents, sister and friends realistic and was moved several times as he developed not only as a person but into someone with powers that he had to learn and manage mostly on his own. The antagonist, the Howler, offers to help Jeremy as he mutates, but the Howler has his own agenda for doing so.

The tale moves repeatedly from Jeremy's present to his past and back again. Mostly I enjoyed the switching to past and present but I found (only twice) it to be a little frustrating in the faster moving sections, as well as at times when the switch wasn't as clear as it could be. To be honest I'm not fond of a lot of backstory interlaced within a novel, but I feel Glenn pulls this off nicely because he works to show his story through the eyes of Jeremy and not just tell the readers as a narrator. Well done!

The ebbs and flows of the story are consistent throughout the book and the pace speeds up nicely in most places. I would have liked just a little slower pace three quarters of the way through, perhaps a bit more of Jessica and Jeremy to show how their relationship deepens as well as giving Jeremy a small 'break' in his life. I wanted to feel more for Jessica at this point as she entered Jeremy's life. This would give me, as a reader some 'rest' and for me, make the ending so much better. However, this is just my opinion and I still had to read it almost non-stop.

The scenes were well written and I felt grounded as a reader, in that I had a sense of time and space. There were a few typos in the book, almost always with ebooks though, but not enough for me to stop reading or even stall in my enjoyment of the story.

Lastly, I feel Glenn successfully wrote this first book through the eyes of a young boy and teenager. That is much harder than it seems when you are an adult. As adults it is easy to include our 'adult wisdom' but Glenn has really done an excellent job giving Jeremy life and making the story readable by adults. It was so easy to read from Jeremy's perspective and yet see all the adult nuances behind everything that happens to Jeremy and the motivations of secondary characters in how they interact with him.

Overall, I feel this book is great value for money!

I have bought the next book in the series and will look at his other work The Soul Collector series.
