We are reading The Pirate City for our literature for homeschool. My students are 12 and 15. Interestingly it involves the Mohammedans (dated title for Muslims), Israelites and the Christians (Europeans). It's an exciting story that depicts the posture of the 19th century of all three groups towards one another. Mr.Ballantyne offers a first-hand glimpse into a locale known for piracy, plunder, slavery, and political maneuverings while guiding the reader through the Algiers of old. He provides much appeal in this story for boys - lots of action. We are about half-way through the book, so I will update when we have finished.

One non-PC point: It is clear that the slaves are mainly the Christians from Europe, with a few Israelites - a detail left out of the government school curriculum, and the history of slavery in general. (The politically correct term in the 21st century is Human Trafficking - and oddly enough involves many racial groups.)

A merchant and his two sons leave Sicily on a voyage, and are taken captive by a pirate from Algiers. They are enslaved, and during their many exciting adventures, we learn of the way of life in the pirate city. There is plenty of history included, along with some of the terrible ways of enforcing discipline which were used. Our main characters behave nobly, rise and fall in favor with the Deys (title of the king of Algiers), and eventually make their escape when all the slaves in Algiers were freed by the British.

I appreciate the fact that Ballantyne's historical adventures are explicitly Christian. In this one, the gospel is presented to a dying man in the slaves' prison.

Until reading this book, I had no idea about much of the history of Algiers, and this book was an easy and exciting way to learn.
One of the best fictions books I have read. A historical novel on the 19th century Algerine pirates who captured and enslaved Europeans. This book lacks nothing- excellent character development, vivid and entertaining style, action filled vinettes… This is the type of book that could never be made into a film- it is too great. Should be read by all boys.

I read this aloud with my young girls and we all enjoyed it and learned much of the era and area. I had never before realised the extent of the "white" slave trade.
Victorian-style tale of Barbary Pirates intertwined with factual history of North Aftica in the 18th and 19th centuries. This tale weaves together characters from several different countries.
Adventure of Christians taken captive in the pirate city of Algiers. Will give young readers a vivid picture of how Christians (and Jews) fared under Muslim despots. Parents must decide if their kids can process that appropriately.
Good book, some descriptions a bit long, but that may also be an 19th century writer and 21st century reader issue. Still recommend. I think that it was as early book by the author, which may explain some of it. We have other works of his that we like better, such as "Red Rooney" and "Martin Rattler". I read somewhere that the author actually lived the role before writing about it, including being a pirate!
R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a prolific Scottish author who wrote adventure books. Most of his stories are based on first hand knowledge. This book, probably written in 1874, is both an adventure as well as a look at the life in 19th century Algiers at about 1815. The historical aspect of the story is very interesting. Leaders in this city were highly corrupt and did not live long. Captured sailors and passengers were used as slaves and worked until they dropped. The story has good plot and the characters are well developed. Although written in the style of English used over 130 years ago, the book is easy to read. When you think of books written about pirates and slavery you tend to think of the West coast of Africa and the Caribbean. This story takes place in the Mediterranean. I would recommend this book.
