This series of books has been a hit with my 6 year old grandson (and me). We are working our way through the entire collection about the boyhood of the famous Viking Hiccup and his friends and dragons. Vivid characters, sometimes crude and a little violent, the stories are creative, suspenseful and exciting. Although they are stand alone stories with flashbacks and background, it is far more fun to start with Book 1 and work your way through the series. Even the drawings done by the author are terrific. Yes Vikings can be ugly and it beats the beautified and sanitized version of books one and two Disney did. My two boys have been reading this series over the past 2 years (thru ages 7-11) and really enjoyed it. They tore through this last one and hope there's more. It's a fun and engaging series with quirky nuances in the presentation that keep them interested, which for young readers is the most important thing - keep them interested, keep them reading. But the series also has some good moral lessons on character and life, so that's an added bonus from a lot of the 'poopy' books out there.
This is the newest episode in the adventures of Hiccup, a nerdy, bookish viking boy who is heir to his tribe's leadership. The strong, brutish, and dumb vikings make fun of him. But he uses brains and ingenuity to prevail. He owns a small, disobedient dragon and has nerdy best friend, Fishlegs. My son (now 11) has been reading these since he was 8. He is a reluctant reader, but he finishes these books in a day or day-and-a-half. He is getting a bit old for them, now, but still wanted to read this one. He is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming movie (should be out in 2010). This book seems to be available only in the UK, and I'm not sure why. I ordered it from the UK, though. Shipping was reasonable, and it arrived very quickly! I highly recommend this, and all the Hiccup books, especially for boys who are reluctant readers.
Cressida Cowell is JK Rowling (whose work I love) with a better sense of language and a more satisfying and nuanced plot. The audible version with David Tennant is delicious. Not just for Kids too--I am a professor in my 40's and listen on the way to work for the sheer pleasure of it.
He started reading this series in April, maybe, and is already on Book 8. I looked these books up, they are actually at RL 6.4 or so, he's just starting 5th grade, so what's great about these is they are a higher RL but they also have a lot of pictures, which is what really draws him to a book (but he doesn't like graphic novels... go figure!). He's a very strong reader, but often rejects books that are text-only... and often books with lots of pictures or drawings are at a really low reading level. Here is an author who gets that kids are extremely visual now, and just because they want pictures doesn't mean they want a "picture book" reading level!
My 12-year-old adores this series!! We are collecting them all. She listens to them every night at bed time. The narration is amazing and it makes you feel like you are right there in the story. she even listens while loading the Dish washer to help her finish a task she does not love....whatever helps get it finished... If your child likes the "How to Train a Dragon" movie or series I highly recommend these.
How to Train Your Dragon is just one of those books that people of all ages can enjoy. One of the things that caught my attention about this book, is that it is written in a way that gives the reader the impression that the author is speaking to them. We find out very early on, that Hiccup, the main character of this tale, is actually narrating to us the stories from his childhood. I always get a kick out of that, because it makes me feel as though I were sitting around small campfire back in the old ages, listening to the old crazy village story-teller imparting stories of heroes and legend, haha.
We absolutely love listening to these CD's. They are great. However, the problem is the packaging. The manufacturer uses a glue substance to make hold together the "pocket" for the front discs. However, they then push the discs into the glue product, getting it all over the disc, making the disc unreadable. Please eliminate the glue in the packaging!!! I have exchanged these more than once simply for this reason (and the glue does not come off the disc easily - we tried)!
